P. C. Vishnunadh appointed Kerala Tourism & Culture Minister

P. C. Vishnunadh has been appointed as the new Tourism and Culture Minister of Kerala, following the return of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government led by Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan after a decade.

Vishnunadh takes over the portfolio from P. A. Mohammed Riyas, who helmed the department since 2021. His appointment comes at a crucial time when Kerala’s tourism sector is witnessing strong growth momentum, both in domestic and international markets.

A four-time MLA representing the Kundara constituency, Vishnunadh brings with him extensive political and organisational experience. Born on March 30, 1978, in Kollam district, his political journey began with the Kerala Students Union (KSU), where he emerged as a prominent youth leader within the Congress ecosystem. Over the years, he has held key positions including President of the Kerala Youth Congress, Working President of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC), and Secretary of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

Known for his grassroots connect, youth-centric approach, and strong organisational capabilities, Vishnunadh is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping Kerala’s tourism roadmap. His leadership assumes significance as the state recorded its highest-ever tourist arrivals in 2025, crossing 25 million visitors, driven largely by robust domestic travel demand and enhanced infrastructure.

Industry stakeholders anticipate that the new minister will prioritise experiential tourism, destination branding, and the expansion of cultural tourism circuits. Strengthening digital outreach, engaging younger travellers, and enhancing Kerala’s positioning in wellness and sustainable tourism are also expected to be key focus areas.

Kerala continues to enjoy global recognition for its backwaters, Ayurveda offerings, eco-tourism initiatives, and rich cultural heritage. With Vishnunadh at the helm, the tourism industry will be closely watching how the new leadership builds on this strong foundation to accelerate growth, boost investments, and drive employment across the sector.

His induction also reflects the UDF government’s broader strategy of entrusting younger leaders with key economic portfolios as the state looks to further strengthen tourism’s contribution to overall economic development.
