Palace on Wheels is set to operate during the month of May for the first time in its 45-year history, marking a significant development for India’s luxury rail tourism sector. The heritage luxury train, jointly operated by Indian Railways and Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation, usually runs only between September and April.
According to Amit Sudarshan, the special summer operation has been introduced due to strong demand despite Rajasthan’s extreme May temperatures, which often cross 42 degrees Celsius. Historically, services were avoided during this period because of the intense heat.
The special six-day luxury journey will operate from May 20 to 25, departing from Safdarjung Railway Station. The route will cover major destinations across Rajasthan including Chittorgarh, Bikaner, Udaipur, Jaisalmer and Sawai Madhopur.
Officials said the entire luxury train has been chartered by a leading nationalised bank for an exclusive journey. The booking is being viewed as a strong sign of confidence in India’s domestic tourism and luxury travel market amid global economic uncertainty.
Palace on Wheels is regarded as one of India’s most prestigious rail experiences, known for its royal interiors, heritage-inspired hospitality and curated cultural journeys through Rajasthan’s historic cities and desert landscapes.
The special summer run also highlights the growing demand for experiential and luxury tourism experiences within India, particularly among corporate and high-end travellers seeking unique domestic travel options.
