Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged Indian citizens to avoid non-essential foreign travel and prioritise domestic tourism, positioning the move as a critical step to conserve foreign exchange amid rising global economic pressures.
Speaking at a public gathering in Hyderabad, Modi highlighted the economic impact of the ongoing U.S.-Iran war and elevated crude oil prices, calling for “nationally responsible” travel and consumption behaviour.
Outbound Travel Discouraged, Domestic Tourism Gets Policy Push
In a direct message that could impact outbound travel demand, the Prime Minister advised against overseas vacations and destination weddings abroad. He emphasised that reducing discretionary foreign travel would help limit foreign exchange outflows at a time of global uncertainty.
Instead, Modi encouraged citizens to explore destinations within India, reinforcing the government’s continued push to strengthen domestic tourism as a key economic driver.
For the travel trade, the statement signals a potential shift in consumer sentiment, particularly in the leisure and wedding segments that have seen strong outbound growth in recent years.
Implications for Travel Trade
The advisory could have mixed implications across the travel ecosystem:
Outbound Tour Operators & OTAs: May see short-term demand softening, especially in long-haul leisure and luxury segments
Domestic Travel Players: Likely to benefit from increased demand for local destinations, especially premium and experiential offerings
Aviation Sector: International traffic could face moderation, while domestic routes may witness stronger load factors
Hospitality Industry: Opportunity for Indian destinations to capture high-spending travellers who would otherwise travel overseas
Economic Context Driving Travel Advisory
Modi linked the appeal to broader concerns around fuel consumption, inflation, and import dependency. With global energy markets under stress, he stressed that conserving foreign exchange reserves is “an act of patriotism.”
The Prime Minister also suggested reviving pandemic-era practices such as virtual meetings and work-from-home arrangements to further reduce travel-related fuel consumption.
‘Responsible Travel’ as a National Priority
Framing the appeal within a larger narrative of economic resilience, Modi called on citizens to align personal choices—including travel—with national priorities.
“Every decision, including how and where we travel, has an impact on the country’s economy,” he indicated, while reiterating the importance of supporting domestic industries and tourism.
