Prime Minister Narendra Modi has renewed his call for citizens to embrace Swadeshi and support domestic products and services, following India’s stronger-than-expected 7.8% GDP growth in the April-June quarter.
Congratulating citizens on the economic performance, Modi said the growth was achieved despite global challenges, including wars, geopolitical uncertainty and disrupted supply chains. He described the performance as a reflection of India’s collective strength and resilience.
The Prime Minister also urged Indians to prioritise domestic tourism over foreign travel. He called on citizens to avoid unnecessary overseas holidays and encouraged couples and families to choose India for destination weddings under the “Wed in India” initiative.
Modi further appealed to citizens to avoid non-essential gold purchases, saying greater reliance on locally produced goods and services would help strengthen the Indian economy and reduce exposure to external shocks.
The appeal comes amid continued global uncertainty linked to international conflicts and supply-chain disruptions. Earlier this year, Modi had also urged citizens to conserve fuel, use public transport and electric vehicles, and reduce unnecessary overseas travel.
Reiterating his vision of a Viksit Bharat, Modi said sustained self-reliance and collective effort would help India build a stronger economy and create greater opportunities for its youth as the country moves towards 2047.
