For wealthy, well-travelled Indians, polar expeditions represent the pinnacle of experiential travel, says Kiran Bhandari, Director, Polarverse. “It has become a status symbol, driving growing demand across all polar destinations, including Antarctica, Svalbard, and Greenland,” he says.
The customer profile leans toward business owners, high-earning professionals like doctors and lawyers, and serious wildlife photographers. “While Indian travellers remain value-conscious, they willingly pay top dollar for exceptional, high-value experiences – a trend reflected in the steady year-over-year increase in average booking size. Cruise lines are adapting to this demand; luxury brands such as Scenic and Atlas Ocean Voyages feature Indian menus on their Arctic and Antarctic sailings,” Bhandari adds.
While Antarctica remains the undisputed favourite, the Arctic is growing at a rapid pace. “Niche, high-exclusivity itineraries like Snow Hill Island, the Ross Sea, and the Northwest Passage are also seeing increased traction among experience-collecting guests. Additionally, micro-cruising is emerging as a popular trend, with families and friend groups chartering entire 12-guest expedition yachts for a fully customized, private itinerary,” he says.
