South Africa’s Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille will visit Jaipur on 21–22 August to represent the country at the BRICS Tourism Ministers Meeting, hosted by India under its 2026 BRICS Chairship. The visit will focus attention on tourism cooperation between the two countries, with visa facilitation and market growth among key areas.
De Lille’s participation is expected to reinforce South Africa’s engagement with India, one of its important international tourism markets. Ismail Dockrat, COO, South African Tourism, will accompany the minister as part of the South African delegation.
India and South Africa share longstanding political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people ties, with tourism forming part of the wider bilateral relationship. Both countries are also members of BRICS and continue to work together across areas including trade and investment, education, skills development, technology, culture, and sport.
Patricia de Lille, Minister of Tourism, South Africa, said, “India is a valued and strategic partner for South Africa, with our relationship built on a shared history and strengthened by enduring people-to-people, cultural and economic ties. As we come together through BRICS, we see significant potential to deepen this partnership through tourism, creating greater opportunities for our people to connect and experience each other’s countries.”
She added that cricket remains an important connection between the two countries, with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 providing another opportunity to strengthen engagement. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Visa facilitation supports growth
South Africa is also focusing on improving the ease of travel for Indian visitors through initiatives including the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) and Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).
The TTOS enables approved tour operators to submit digital visa applications on behalf of eligible travellers, with the scheme designed to simplify group travel from India and other targeted markets. South Africa’s Department of Tourism has previously identified India and China as key source markets for future tourism growth.
The ETA has also been rolled out as part of South Africa’s digital immigration reforms. The current system allows eligible Indian passport holders to apply digitally, subject to the applicable entry and airport requirements.
De Lille said, “Our decision to introduce the Electronic Travel Authorisation further reflects the importance we place on the Indian market and our commitment to strengthening and facilitating travel between our two countries.”
South Africa has been working to reduce travel barriers for Indian visitors for several years, with the country’s tourism authorities previously highlighting visa processes and air connectivity as areas requiring attention in the India market.
Cricket and experiential travel
Beyond visa facilitation, South Africa is positioning its diverse tourism offering for Indian travellers, including wildlife and safari, adventure, culture, gastronomy, luxury, and business events.
The ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 is expected to provide an additional platform for sports tourism, with Indian visitors able to combine attendance at matches with travel across South Africa and the wider region.
The BRICS Tourism Ministers Meeting will provide the latest platform for South Africa and India to explore opportunities for greater tourism cooperation. For South Africa, the engagement comes as it seeks to strengthen its presence in India through improved travel facilitation, industry partnerships, and broader destination promotion.
De Lille’s visit, alongside Dockrat’s participation, underlines South Africa’s continued focus on India and its intent to use tourism as a channel for stronger bilateral engagement and increased travel between the two markets.
