US immigration issues travel advisory for Indian visa holders

US immigration attorneys have issued a travel risk advisory for Indian Green Card, H-1B, and F-1 visa holders due to recent policy changes under the Trump administration. Although India is not included in the planned travel bans affecting 43 nations, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bhutan, Indian travellers are still facing increased scrutiny. These measures have led to concerns about longer processing times, visa stamping backlogs, and even the possibility of detention at US airports.

Immigration experts warn that individuals traveling abroad for work or visa renewals may experience significant delays and administrative challenges. The backlog at US consulates overseas is causing prolonged waiting periods, particularly for H-1B and F-1 visa holders. Those returning to the US after international travel should prepare for thorough questioning by Customs and Border Protection officials. Secondary inspections at ports of entry can take over two hours, creating additional stress for travellers.

US Vice President JD Vance recently heightened anxiety among Indian immigrants by stating that a Green Card does not guarantee indefinite residency in the United States. This statement, combined with the administration’s intensified crackdown, has led to increased fear among those seeking long-term settlement. Experts recommend renewing Green Cards and work visas well in advance to avoid complications arising from administrative delays.

Particular attention is being given to those transitioning from an F-1 visa to an H-1B work visa, as well as individuals seeking H-1B extensions after their visas have lapsed for over a year. These groups face the highest levels of scrutiny and longer review processes. Immigration attorneys advise travellers to remain calm, cooperative, and well-prepared for detailed questioning upon re-entry to the United States.
