Yousmarg to expand eco-tourism with new trekking trails

Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather reviewed the progress of tourism development projects in Yousmarg and nearby destinations, including Haijan, Nilnag and Nagbal. The meeting focused on ongoing works, new initiatives under the Special Area Sustainable Community-Centred Initiative (SASCI), and resolving issues affecting project execution.

Officials from the Yousmarg Development Authority informed that ₹357 lakh has been sanctioned for 21 ongoing and new development projects during 2026-27. More than ₹85 lakh has already been released to support infrastructure upgrades and tourism-related works across the region.

The Speaker emphasised developing a network of trekking routes connecting Yousmarg with Drugtolen, Burgah, Nilnag, Haijan, Fresnag and Sang-e-Safaid. The proposed trails are expected to promote eco-tourism, offer unique experiences for visitors and showcase the region’s natural beauty.

Rather also directed departments to improve coordination and resolve pending issues, particularly forest clearances, to ensure timely completion of projects. He stressed that all infrastructure should be developed with a focus on quality, sustainability and long-term benefits for tourists and local communities.

Highlighting Yousmarg’s potential as a year-round destination, the Speaker called for greater focus on winter tourism, including adventure and winter sports activities. He said expanding tourism beyond the summer season would create employment opportunities for local youth and strengthen the regional economy.

During his visit, Rather interacted with residents of Darewan Basti, who proposed developing the traditional settlement as a heritage tourism destination. Local delegations also raised issues related to road connectivity, mobile network coverage, ATM facilities and other public amenities, with the Speaker assuring them that their concerns would be addressed.
