The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has prepared a detailed plan to upgrade passenger facilities at Chennai airport’s domestic and international terminals, with improvements planned across signage, seating, workspaces and other amenities.
AAI officials said they had reviewed passenger concerns in recent weeks and identified areas requiring improvement. The plans come after the Tamil Nadu government wrote to the Centre seeking a change in the operator of Chennai airport.
Improved wayfinding is among the key priorities, with new and larger illuminated signboards planned across the terminals. The boards will also indicate distances between terminals and are expected to be installed within four months, subject to approvals.
AAI also plans to introduce display boards showing live waiting times at security queues, allowing passengers to see the estimated wait at each lane before choosing where to queue. Officials said the system is intended to make the security process more convenient.
The terminal interiors are also set for changes, including upgraded furniture, additional murals showcasing Tamil Nadu’s heritage and dedicated workstations where passengers can comfortably work on laptops while waiting for flights. Accessible charging points, additional greenery and improved baby-care rooms are also part of the proposed upgrades.
The proposed changes will require approval from AAI headquarters in New Delhi before implementation. Officials said the overall objective is to enhance terminal facilities and provide passengers with a more comfortable and efficient airport experience.
