Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in Guwahati has commissioned a new 570-metre Precision Approach Lighting System (PALS), strengthening its approach and landing infrastructure and improving aircraft operations during low-visibility conditions.
The upgraded system extends the airport’s approach lighting from the earlier 180 metres to 570 metres, providing pilots with enhanced visual references while approaching the runway. The longer lighting system enables earlier identification of the runway environment and helps pilots maintain proper alignment with the runway centreline during the final approach.
The upgrade is particularly relevant for Guwahati, which experiences heavy monsoon rainfall and periods of reduced visibility that can affect flight operations. The enhanced PALS is expected to improve operational continuity during adverse weather and minimise weather-related disruptions, including potential diversions.
The project involved planning, installation, calibration, testing and commissioning in accordance with applicable aviation safety and regulatory requirements. The lighting infrastructure, associated electrical systems and photometric performance were engineered to provide consistent visual guidance to arriving aircraft.
The airport said the commissioning forms part of its broader programme to modernise airside infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and strengthen aviation safety standards.
