The historic Havelock Bridge in Andhra Pradesh is set for a major transformation, with the state government approving a ₹47 crore redevelopment project to convert the structure into a premier tourism attraction ahead of the Godavari Pushkarams in 2027.
The initiative forms part of the Akhanda Godavari Project and aims to restore the century-old bridge by combining heritage preservation with modern, experience-driven tourism infrastructure.
Constructed in 1897 during British rule, the 2.7-km-long steel bridge—featuring 56 spans—was once among Asia’s longest railway bridges. It served as a critical rail link across the Godavari River for nearly 100 years before being decommissioned in 1997 after a new rail bridge became operational.
Following years of neglect and proposals to dismantle it for scrap—which triggered public opposition—the bridge was retained as a heritage structure. The upcoming redevelopment marks a significant step towards repurposing it as a landmark destination.
Key Features of the Project
The revamped bridge will host a range of attractions, including:
AI-powered Time Travel Tunnel
Aquarium Tunnel
Hologram Zoo
Space Gallery
Heritage viewing decks
Light-and-laser shows
Cultural performance areas
Ropeway connectivity
Food courts and dedicated selfie zones
Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh said the project will help preserve a key engineering landmark while boosting tourism in Rajamahendravaram.
He noted that the redevelopment would position the city as a major tourism hub, especially during the Pushkarams, while showcasing a blend of heritage and modern attractions.
Rajahmundry Urban MLA Adireddy Srinivas said the initiative was driven by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu as part of broader efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure in the state.
Once completed, the project is expected to attract significant domestic and international tourist footfall, giving a new lease of life to one of India’s most iconic river bridges.
