India Strengthens Position As Global Medical Travel Hub

India is steadily reinforcing its position as a global hub for Medical Value Travel (MVT), with the government projecting the sector to grow from USD 8.7 billion in 2025 to USD 16.2 billion by 2030. This expansion reflects a broader global shift, as patients increasingly travel across borders seeking affordable and timely healthcare solutions.

Globally, the MVT market—valued at USD 115.6 billion in 2022—is expected to reach nearly USD 286.1 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of around 10.8 per cent. Rising healthcare costs, long waiting periods, and the increasing burden of lifestyle diseases are key factors driving this trend worldwide.

India’s growing appeal lies in its ability to combine advanced medical infrastructure with traditional wellness systems. The integration of modern treatments with AYUSH practices such as yoga and Ayurveda creates a comprehensive offering that caters to both curative and preventive healthcare needs.

Government initiatives are further strengthening the ecosystem. These include the introduction of the AYUSH Visa, the development of Regional Medical Hubs, and enhanced digital facilitation to streamline patient access. Together, these measures aim to position India as a seamless and accessible healthcare destination for international patients.

In 2025, India recorded 9.15 million foreign tourist arrivals, with approximately 5,07,244 visitors travelling specifically for medical purposes—accounting for around 5.5 per cent of total inbound tourism. Countries such as Bangladesh, Iraq, Uzbekistan, Somalia, Turkmenistan, Oman, and Kenya continue to be key source markets for medical travellers.

India’s credibility is supported by a strong regulatory framework, with many hospitals accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers, ensuring high standards of safety and care. Looking ahead, plans under the Union Budget 2026–27 to establish five Regional Medical Hubs are expected to further strengthen the country’s position in the global medical tourism landscape.
