Indian travellers are emerging as high-value contributors to Sri Lanka’s tourism economy, spending an average of USD 154 per day, exceeding the overall international visitor average of USD 148, according to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).
SLTDA Chairman Buddhika Hewawasam said the Indian market has evolved significantly, with travellers increasingly choosing premium experiences and outspending visitors from several European countries on a daily basis.
To tap this growing demand, Sri Lanka has expanded its promotional efforts beyond southern India, targeting cities such as Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Mumbai and New Delhi while promoting luxury holidays, destination weddings and other premium tourism segments.
The country aims to strengthen its position as a premium Indian Ocean destination by leveraging its cultural ties with India, diverse landscapes and geographical proximity.
Former Sri Lankan minister Patali Champika Ranawaka has advocated shifting from mass tourism to a high-value model focused on attracting higher-spending travellers through the country’s wildlife, beaches, hill country and cultural heritage.
He also called for greater transparency through digital payment systems and stronger regulatory frameworks to encourage Indian investment in tourism infrastructure and support long-term sector growth.
