India’s international tourist arrivals rise 57% in a decade, touch 20.6 million in 2024

India recorded a 57% increase in international tourist arrivals over the past decade, with total arrivals including foreign nationals and Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) rising from 13.1 million in 2014 to 20.6 million in 2024, according to data shared by the Ministry of Tourism in the Rajya Sabha. The figures underscore the countrys steady post-pandemic tourism recovery, supported by improved connectivity, infrastructure development, and focused international promotion. During the same period, India welcomed 9.95 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in 2024, nearing pre-pandemic levels, while international visitor spending reached a record ₹3.1 lakh crore, highlighting stronger tourism receipts. The government attributed the growth to initiatives such as enhanced tourism infrastructure, destination development under flagship schemes, and global marketing campaigns. The latest data reinforces Indias growing appeal in the global tourism market, even as the sector continues to focus on increasing long-haul arrivals, improving air connectivity and expanding tourism offerings beyond traditional destinations.
