Mithun Chakraborty proposes five-star Tiger Tourism across 10 Sundarbans islands, targeting local jobs and luxury stays

Mithun Chakraborty has proposed a ‘Tiger Tourism’ project across eight to 10 islands in West Bengal’s Sundarbans, including five-star facilities and treehouses. Speaking after a one-day visit to the region, Chakraborty said the identified islands could be leased for 99 years to developers meeting the proposed five-star standard, with 70–80% of employment reserved for local residents. Official Sundarban Tiger Reserve data records 101 tigers in the 2022 assessment, occupying 1,895 sq km, while the Forest Department’s 2023–24 camera-trapping exercise identified 105 tigers across the Sundarbans landscape to date.
