Mulshi Dam ferry service improves village connectivity

A new passenger ferry service has been launched across the Mulshi Dam reservoir in Maharashtra to improve transport connectivity for remote villages in the region. The ferry service connects Mulshi village with Waghwadi and is expected to reduce travel distance by nearly 25 kilometres for local residents.

The service was officially inaugurated on April 27, 2026, and is expected to benefit people living in around 16 villages near the reservoir. Villages such as Waghwadi, Shirgaon, Vadgaon, Vaduste, Bhadas Khonda, Nimbarwadi, Bhorkas and Wandre will now have easier and faster access to nearby areas.

Residents had previously depended on long road journeys around the reservoir due to the lack of direct transport routes. Officials stated that the ferry service offers a practical solution in the hilly terrain surrounding Mulshi Dam, where building road infrastructure is difficult and expensive.

The ferry service is expected to improve access to schools, healthcare facilities, markets and government services for villagers. Authorities also believe it will reduce fuel expenses and save travel time for daily commuters who regularly move between villages for work and essential activities.

Fare prices for the ferry have been kept affordable for rural passengers. Adults will pay INR 20, children INR 10 and motorcycles can be transported for INR 50. Officials hope the affordable pricing will encourage widespread use of the new transport system among villagers.

Located around 44 kilometres from Pune, Mulshi is already known for its scenic landscapes and eco-tourism appeal. Authorities expect the ferry service to not only improve daily life for residents but also support tourism growth by making the region more accessible for travellers visiting the backwaters and nearby hills.
