Nepal has formally requested India to recognise its biometric National Identity (NID) card as a valid travel document for cross-border journeys.
The proposal seeks to allow the biometric NID card to be accepted alongside passports and citizenship certificates for travel between the two neighbouring countries.
If approved, the move is expected to simplify cross-border travel and make movement easier for citizens travelling between India and Nepal.
The request reflects Nepal’s efforts to modernise travel documentation through the use of secure biometric identity cards.
India is yet to take a decision on Nepal’s proposal, which will require bilateral approval before implementation.
The initiative could further strengthen people-to-people connectivity and facilitate smoother travel under the long-standing open-border arrangement between the two countries.
