Pune Airport expansion proposal gains central momentum

The long-awaited Pune airport expansion project has moved a step closer to reality, as the Maharashtra government has formally submitted a detailed proposal to the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation. The ambitious plan includes acquiring more than 300 acres of land to extend the runway and build new aviation infrastructure, such as an advanced maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility. The initiative is seen as a vital step toward boosting Pune’s aviation capacity and regional connectivity.

According to senior officials, the project proposal will also require clearance from the Ministry of Defence (MoD), since Pune Airport operates under the jurisdiction of the Indian Air Force. Only after MoD approval will the state begin land acquisition. The proposed land includes both government-owned and private properties located around the existing airfield, marking one of the most extensive expansions in recent years.

The expansion plan focuses on runway extension, the creation of additional parking bays, and a dedicated terminal for private aircraft and helicopters. The proposed MRO unit is expected to significantly reduce operational costs by allowing aircraft servicing and repairs to be handled locally, minimizing dependency on facilities in other metros like Mumbai and Hyderabad.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol confirmed the submission of the proposal, emphasising the inclusion of both a general aviation terminal and an MRO unit in the development blueprint. He stated that the government aims to accelerate approvals so construction work can begin swiftly once all clearances are received.

Officials noted that the rising number of private charters and helicopters operating from Pune has created an urgent need for a separate general aviation terminal. This will help streamline private flight operations while improving safety and efficiency for passengers.

Once completed, the project is expected to enhance flight handling capacity, enable operations of larger aircraft, and position Pune as a major hub for aviation maintenance and regional air connectivity — marking a significant milestone in Maharashtra’s aviation growth strategy.
