Religious tourism drives realty boom across Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a sharp rise in demand for housing and commercial real estate in major religious tourism hubs, including Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, Mathura, Mirzapur and Chitrakoot.

Investment in the formal real estate sector across the state’s leading faith tourism destinations increased 66% from around INR 982 crore in H1CY25 to INR 1,631 crore in H1CY26, highlighting the growing economic impact of religious tourism.

Housing development has also accelerated, with the number of units in realty projects across Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi, Prayagraj and Mirzapur rising from 2,481 to 3,867 during the same period.

Varanasi recorded the biggest increase in real estate investment, rising from INR 205 crore across four projects in H1CY25 to INR 944 crore across six projects in H1CY26. The growth follows major developments such as the Kashi Vishwanath Dham redevelopment and the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

Tourist arrivals across Uttar Pradesh more than doubled from 640 million in 2024 to 1.56 billion in 2025. Prayagraj recorded more than 691 million visitors, followed by Ayodhya with 299 million, Varanasi with 173 million, Mathura with 102 million and Chitrakoot with 36 million.

The surge in visitors is encouraging both private and public-sector developers to invest in modern housing, commercial projects and greenfield townships, as religious destinations increasingly attract people looking to settle, invest and build businesses.
