Summer escapes turn slower, more intentional at THE SEN

As travellers increasingly look beyond crowded hill stations and itinerary-driven holidays, boutique retreats focused on slow living, design, and immersive experiences are beginning to shape a new kind of luxury travel in India. Nestled in the hills of Uttarakhand, newly opened THE SEN is tapping into this shift with an intimate hospitality concept centred around stillness, nature, and sensory-led experiences.

Opened in February 2026, the four-suite retreat overlooks a lush valley near the quieter stretches of Jim Corbett National Park and has been conceived as a private sanctuary where guests are encouraged to disconnect from fast-paced schedules and reconnect with the landscape around them.

The property has been created by fashion industry veteran and creative entrepreneur Nakul Sen, alongside Shagun Khanna, combining architecture, interiors, and experiential hospitality into one cohesive concept. Developed over four years, THE SEN has been carefully built around existing trees and the natural contours of the hills, preserving the surrounding ecosystem while creating intimate spaces that blend seamlessly with nature.

With only four suites, the retreat intentionally focuses on exclusivity and privacy, catering to families, couples, and small groups seeking quieter, personalised stays. Large glass walls, natural materials, marble flooring, wooden accents, and open sit-outs allow the outdoors to become part of the guest experience, while the overall design philosophy leans heavily towards calm, understated luxury.

Beyond accommodation, the retreat is placing strong emphasis on curated experiences. Guests can explore lesser-known safari zones around Jim Corbett, including Sonanadi and Lansdowne Division, which offer a slower and less commercial wildlife experience. Birdwatching trails, village walks, and guided forest explorations further connect travellers to the local landscape and culture.

Evenings at the retreat are designed to shift into a more atmospheric setting with experiences such as cinema by the pool under open skies, accompanied by candlelit dinners and live grills.

A key differentiator for THE SEN is its strong focus on tablescaping and dining presentation, an extension of Nakul Sen’s couture-inspired design sensibility. Every meal is styled differently, with evolving table settings shaped by light, mood, seasonality, and local ingredients. The culinary approach combines regional influences with seasonal produce, creating a dining experience that feels immersive rather than conventional.

The retreat reflects a broader shift currently visible across luxury travel, where travellers are increasingly prioritising meaningful experiences, mindful hospitality, slower itineraries, and deeper emotional connections over excess and hurried tourism.

Pricing at THE SEN starts from INR 31,000 per night for double occupancy, inclusive of meals and curated experiences.
