Thailand proposes foreign visitor fee alongside THB 1.75 billion domestic travel subsidy

Thailand is proposing a fee on foreign visitors while preparing a THB1.75-billion domestic tourism subsidy programme, as the government seeks to strengthen tourism activity and spread its benefits. Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul said revenue from the proposed foreign visitor fee would be channelled into the Thailand Tourism Promotion Fund to develop existing and purpose-built attractions, finance visitor insurance and safety measures, and restore environments affected by tourism. He said, “The government wanted smaller tourism operators to benefit broadly.” No fee amount, collection mechanism, or implementation date has been announced. Under the Thai Travel Thai Plus programme, the government proposes to subsidise 50% of eligible spending, capped at THB 3,000 per entitlement, with 500,000 entitlements planned.
