Rising Indian incomes are driving outbound travel, while travellers increasingly compare overseas hospitality, infrastructure, and prices with domestic offerings, Bhuvnesh Kumar, Tourism Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, said at PATA India Chapter’s 56th Annual General Meeting. He noted that Indians returning from Thailand, Vietnam, and Dubai compare their overseas spending with hotel costs in India.
“When Indians travel to Thailand, when they travel to Vietnam, they travel to Dubai, and what they get for the money they spend, when they come back and see the cost of the hotels in India, they come back and compare,” Kumar said. The comparison presents a value-for-money challenge for Indian hotels and destination marketers, while shaping opportunities for domestic tour operators and outbound travel businesses.
