UN Women backs Madhya Pradesh’s women-led tourism model, strengthening inclusive destination appeal


Madhya Pradesh’s Safe Tourist Destination for Women (STDW) initiative has received international recognition after UN Women India Country Representative Shoko Ishikawavisited the programme and commended its role in making tourism safer, more inclusive and community-led. Her endorsement highlights the state’s efforts to integrate women’s leadership, entrepreneurship and financial independence into the tourism value chain.

During the visit, women participants showcased handcrafted souvenirs, fabric jewellery and locally made artworks developed through skill-building programmes, demonstrating how tourism is generating sustainable livelihoods for local communities. For the travel trade, the initiative enhances Madhya Pradesh’s positioning as a responsible and inclusive destination, aligning with the growing demand for community-based and sustainable tourism experiences. The recognition from UN Women is expected to strengthen the state’s destination branding while encouraging tourism stakeholders to adopt gender-inclusive practices that create shared economic benefits and enrich visitor experiences through authentic local engagement.
