Ruh-e-Gul initiative strengthens sustainable waste management in Gulmarg

The Ruh-e-Gul initiative will strengthen waste management in Gulmarg through the installation of community waste bins, collection trolleys, additional sanitation manpower, and upgrades to Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) and a bio-gas plant.

The programme will also conduct awareness and behavioural change campaigns involving tourists, local businesses and residents to encourage shared responsibility for maintaining the destination’s cleanliness.

MakeMyTrip Foundation said the project builds on its earlier waste management initiatives at Dal Lake and several other destinations across India.

The Gulmarg Development Authority stressed the importance of upgrading infrastructure to meet the demands of increasing tourist arrivals while protecting the hill destination’s fragile ecosystem.

Gulmarg currently generates around four metric tonnes of waste every day, underscoring the need for improved waste collection and scientific processing systems.

Through long-term infrastructure development and community participation, Ruh-e-Gul aims to preserve Gulmarg’s natural beauty and promote sustainable tourism for future generations.
