The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has appointed Saadia Zahidi as its next Director General, making her the first woman and ninth person to lead the global aviation body.
Zahidi will succeed Willie Walsh, who steps down on July 31, 2026. Until she assumes office, IATA Chief Financial Officer Sandrine Le Borgne will serve as Interim Director General.
Previously a Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board at the World Economic Forum (WEF), Zahidi brings over two decades of experience in global policy, economics and international cooperation.
IATA represents more than 370 airlines across over 120 countries, accounting for approximately 85% of global air traffic, while setting industry standards and supporting airline operations worldwide.
IATA Board Chair Roberto Alvo said Zahidi’s expertise in technology, geopolitics and global economic issues will help the association address the aviation industry’s evolving challenges and opportunities.
Zahidi holds degrees from Harvard University, The Graduate Institute and Smith College, and is recognised for leading several influential WEF reports, including the Global Gender Gap and Future of Jobs reports.
